Custom Home Design Trends

As 2016 heads into the end of summer and toward the fall, there are several popular Custom Home Design Trends that have become increasingly popular, that you may want to consider as work through the building and construction process at your new home at Belmont Lake Preserve in Rocky Mount.

The kitchen as many of you know has become one of the main focal points not only when building a new home, but also among the Custom Home Design Trends that have been noted throughout 2016 thus far. One such trend that has consistently remained popular in kitchens this year is “white on white spaces.” This “clean look” with the usage of white cabinets with a light colored or white counter top or back splash has returned in a big way. The main factor attributing to making this one of the most frequently seen of 2016’s Custom Home Design Trends, is the overall desire of new home buyers and builders to use the kitchen as the center of the home for entertaining guests, as the brightness of the “white on white” helps in opening up and making the appear large.

Double islands in the kitchen is another of this year’s Custom Home Design Trends that has seen many who have built a new home include, for much of the same reason. One island for seating and entertaining, with a second for much of the same and in some cases even for a sink, makes for more overall space when trying to be a good host.

As far as Custom Home Design Trends in regards to flooring this year, reclaimed lumber continued to be the choice of many. First gaining major popularity a few years back, this eco-friendly option in floors adds a unique look, and a bit of character and personality also.

It was not very long ago that brass fixtures in a newly built home were considered outdated and less than savory as far as Custom Home Design Trends go. However, they are back with a vengeance this year, mainly due to how “unique look of the brass when partnered with a more contemporary style fixture.

Continuing to take priority among the new homeowners in 2016 was a focus on indoor/outdoor living spaces. As is commonplace here among each of the Custom Home Design Trends discussed, this too plays into the open space concept that has become so important in recent years. Allowing indoor and outdoor spaces to flow seamlessly such as an outdoor living room type area around a fireplace or the indoor dining area opening to a patio space.

With these and so many other Custom Home Design Trends to consider in building a home at Belmont Lake Preserve, you can add some of these ideas to the existing floor plans or discuss other ideas with the builder team working on your new house. Rocky Mount Active Lifestyle

With the Rocky Mount city council recently discussing possible upgrades to one of the city’s beautiful outdoor spaces that sits only minutes from your new home in Belmont Lake Preserve, the already plentiful options for Rocky Mount Active Lifestyle activities could increase with the proposed changes at Battle Park.

Although the upgrades that would include these Rocky Mount Active Lifestyle options at Battle Park are not likely to occur immediately, the interest from the city officials was genuine. The upgrades that were spoken of at the meeting would see a new “spray ground,” a butterfly garden, a zip line, widened walking paths, and a BMX track.

These proposed items were noted to be in the concept stage still, however, several other short-term efforts that also would offer some new Rocky Mount Active Lifestyle options were also brought up at the August 10 council meeting. An outdoor outfitter, environmental education, and educational hiking trails were the short term Rocky Mount Active Lifestyle ideas tossed around, and Assistant City Manager, Thomas Moton, Jr. explained that many residents have been behind this project because they’d like to see Battle Park made a focal point of Rocky Mount’s tourism industry and economy.

“With ideas for improvements we hope to make this area a destination location,” Moton, Jr. went on to explain. “With possible bike trails and other activities, we hope to attract more travelers and to maximize opportunities for people to enjoy the water.” He added, “Battle Park is also the hub to connect our assets from MLK Park to City Lake, so visitors can use the greenway to enjoy all seven miles of greenway trails that Rocky Mount has to offer.”

Being in such early stages of development, the cost of the Battle Park project that would see the addition of these great Rocky Mount Active Living options was not brought to the table. However, there has been some interest shown by Rocky Mount Mills (which is owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company) in a possible lease or purchase of Panther Island,  which is part of Battle Park. If this were the case, that company would implement improvements by itself and allow the city to focus on the remainder of the park.

Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department Director, Kelvin Yarrell addressed the possibility of the Battle Park upgrades, voicing the following conclusion.  “The true plan would come from working with our citizens, elected officials and the business community, such as Capitol Broadcasting, to look at the entire scope of the project once funding becomes available.”

Rocky Mount Economic Development

With an influx of new jobs and businesses coming to town, Rocky Mount Economic Development continued on a huge upswing last week with the announcement that Rocky Mount has been selected as the location for an all new $272 million CSX rail-to-truck terminal project that will bring about 900 jobs to the area and another 1,500 state wide.

Announced on July 19 in a press conference held next door to the Belmont Lake Preserve North Carolina golf community, at the Dunn Center by Governor Pat McCrory, was the news of the project’s financial awards that were unanimously approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. These include $110 million from the N.C. Transportation Department in performance incentives, $4.3 million in Job Development Investment Grants, and $7.8 million in intermodal tax credits. Ensuring the huge spike in Rocky Mount Economic Development is the fact that for CSX to receive the above incentives, they must invest $160 million into the Rocky Mount facility by 2024, meet all local hiring goals and keep 876 jobs that are already in the state.

CSX CEO, Michael Ward spoke on the selection of Rocky Mount for the 500 acre terminal, which will transfer freight containers that hold a variety of consumer goods between trains and trucks by electric cranes before being  sent to their drop off destination. Ward noted that the ideal location, the growing industrial market in Rocky Mount, and its existing CSX rail operations all weighed into the project that will be a huge boost to Rocky Mount Economic Development.

Leonard Wiggins, the Chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners spoke on several topics that residents may have been wondering about following the CSX announcement, as he had recently toured a similar facility in Ohio. “We stood right under this massive crane and you couldn’t hear it operate,” he offered up clearing the air for any residents who may have worries about any noise disturbances. Wiggins went on to remind residents that the terminal will also bring Rocky Mount back to its roots. “This is a railroad community,” he said. “ Railroad lines in Rocky Mount date back as far as 1840.”

This latest project in Rocky Mount Economic Development, the terminal, will be known as “The Carolina Connector” will also bring more public benefits and economic output for both the Rocky Mount community and the surrounding area. The Carolina’s Gateway Partnership noted that more than $310 million in public benefits and upwards of $125 million in statewide economic output. Gateway Partnership CEO, Norris Tolleson spoke to the huge effect this will have on the Rocky Mount Economic Development and the surrounding municipalities, stating, “This is the beginning of a new era of quality jobs in the Twin Counties.

The terminal is set to open for business in 2020 and CSX will host two open house events for the public to find out more and ask any questions they may have about the project. These will be held on Wednesday, July 27 at 6-8 pm at the Edgecombe County Administrative Building in Downtown Tarboro and on Thursday, July 28 in the Brown Auditorium at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount from 6-8 pm.

Durham Bulls Baseball

With a lineage unmatched by even most Major League Baseball teams, and a place in pop culture history and lore forever, Durham Bulls Baseball is a tradition like no other in the summer months that awaits you and at under an hour away from your front door at the Belmont Lake Preserve NC golf community, it won’t be long until you are saying, “Play Ball.”

Durham Bulls Baseball

A beautiful night of Bulls Baseball at DBAP

Dating way back to the 1902, the history of the Durham Bulls baseball franchise is one of the most interesting and storied of any professional sports organization at any level of play. While the most recent run of pro ball in Durham began in 1980, when they became the Bulls and later that decade would gain notoriety through the major motion picture bearing the team’s name, the team originally began play in the North Carolina League as the Durham Tobacconists in April of 1902.

After the initial season of play that league folded, but in the teams’ first appearance under the Durham Bulls name, they would not have too long before they once again were taking the field, as the North Carolina State League (NCSL) formed in late 1912 and at the start of 1913 the Bulls would start playing at Hanes Field, which sits on what would now be part of Duke University’s east campus. The NCSL would cease to exist in May of 1917 due to the start of World War I in leading to a two year hiatus in professional baseball being played in Durham.

Durham Bulls Baseball

The “snorting bull” that was originally developed in the movie “Bull Durham,” now has a variation sitting beyond the outfield wall at DBAP

After the disbanding of the NCSL and the two years before Durham Bulls Baseball would return to action in 1919 with the formation of the Piedmont League, there would only be one summer (1944) without professional baseball in town until 1972. During this 50 year period, one significant pickup by the franchise would be when they purchased and then began the 1926 season playing their home games at El Toro Park, which would be renamed in 1933 as Durham Athletic Park where they would continue to play at until 1993. It would also be during this time period that Durham Bulls Baseball would first become affiliated with an MLB franchise, as they became part of the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 1932. To the day, they remain an MLB affiliate, just one league below the “bigs,” as the Triple A team in the Tampa Rays organization.

Following their brief merger with the city of Raleigh from 1968-1972 in the New York Mets family as the Raleigh-Durham Mets, pro baseball again left the Triangle area, but Durham Bulls Baseball would return for good in 1980 and become the franchise that is more recognizable than any in the country among the ranks of the minor leagues. The late fall months of 1987 would have much to do with the spike in notoriety for Durham Bulls Baseball as, Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins, and Susan Sarandon would star in the huge box office hit, “Bull Durham,” which would be released in 1988 and most of which was filmed at Durham Athletic Park and in the surrounding areas.

Durham Bulls Baseball

Released in 1988, “Bull Durham” starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and others brought national attention to the franchise

In May of 1990, Jim Goodmon would purchase the Durham Bulls Baseball franchise, and announce his plans for a new stadium in what would be known as Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP), a beautiful ballpark by the standards of any league that would have an additional 10,000 seats and allow for the team to begin setting attendance records on a near annual basis. Just last season, in 2015 the Durham Bulls Baseball club set their own single season paid attendance record, with 554,788 fans coming through the turnstiles at DBAP last season.

Durham Bulls Baseball is steeped in a rich history that continues to excite their fans and provide great family fun at every one of their home games played. The team also offers many great giveaways and host theme nights at the park throughout the season. For a complete look at Durham Bulls Baseball including their full schedule, ticket information, specials and discounts, and so much more, visit durhambulls.com.
