Showing the strength of the growing and bustling local business community in Rocky Mount Business, Babington Technology, was one of just 13 small businesses from across the United States recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to receive a grant from the allotted $1.3 million dollars to be part of a project to aid in the reduction of electrical power consumption, reduce the emission of carbon, and lower the price for consumers associated with cookstove combustion technology.

On the EPA’s official website, it was noted that “The 13 businesses we are funding today are producing innovative and creative solutions for our country’s environmental problems,” said Thomas Burke, EPA science advisor and deputy assistant administrator of EPA’s Office of Research and Development. “Small businesses play an integral role in creating technologies that will help ensure a sustainable future for our country.”

The article continued in explaining the grants, saying, “Each of the 13 companies will receive a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract for up to $100,000 to develop their green technology. If Phase I is successful, companies will be eligible to apply for a Phase II contract of up to $300,000 to develop and commercialize their technology for the marketplace.”

Rocky-Mount-Outdoor-Living

In early December, the already beautiful scenery and vast options in Rocky Mount Outdoor Living received a nice boost, as the NC Community Foundation gave a grant to the city to aid in the Rocky Mount Litter Cleanup Project.

Speaking about the grant to improve the quality of Rocky Mount Outdoor Living, which actually was given to the city through the Futrell-Mauldin Community Fund for a Greater Rocky Mount, the city grant writer, Cornelia McGee stated the following.

“ I am excited about the opportunity for the city of Rocky Mount to partner with the Futrell-Mauldin Community Fund for Greater Rocky Mount.” She continued, “I am further confident that this amazing grant opportunity will afford up to eight residents at Christian Fellowship Home and Tri-County Industries employment and a more stable quality of life. The grant will also help to reduce litter and restore cleanliness to our roadsides.”

According to the official City of Rocky mount website, to this point, even prior to the grant for improving Rocky Mount Outdoor Living, the city funded Rocky Mount Litter Cleanup Project has been a huge success and helped drastically to keep the streets and parks city wide clean. “The litter crew has retrieved a total of 2,027 bags of trash, an estimated 40,540 pounds of trash, 149 signs and 15 tires. From March 1, 2017 through Nov. 10, 2017, the crew has worked more than 4,300 hours on litter cleanup,” the city website explained.

Art Classes in Rocky Mount

Moving from the winter months and into the Spring, the temperature is not the only thing seeing an increase here locally, as there is always an influx of activities being offered in Downtown Rocky Mount. The 2018 “Best of” Rankings from the “experts on safety and family living” at niche.com, has named the City of Rocky Mount the number one municipality among the Best Places for Millennials in Nash County.

Using their tried and true grading system to arrive at the annual listing of Best Places for Millennials in Nash County in 2018, Rocky Mount achieved the number one ranking out opf the five major municipalities they reviewed in their county-wide study.

The major factors given for being named the top city among Best Places for Millennials in Nash County in 2018, were several very crucial elements that millennials, and any new home owner would take into consideration before relocation. First and foremost in the items in favor of Rocky Mount was its diverse community, as well as being noted for a vast improvement over the past decade in being a family friendly environment to raise a family a great selection of entertainment options year round under the catergory “nightlife.”

Rocky Mount Easter Events

In addition to the fantastic on-site amenities at the Belmont Lake Preserve NC golf community, there are also many fantastic events and activities for both children and adults alike in Rocky Mount. Whether they are outdoor events in the Summer time or one of the many Rocky Mount Family Events like their upcoming annual Spring themed activities, including the Easter Eggstravaganza to be held on Sunday, April 1 at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Science in downtown Rocky Mount

Holiday themed Rocky Mount Family Events are always some of the most anticipated, with something for all ages to enjoy. With traditional Easter activities for the children starting at 2 p.m. and running until 5 p.m., along with games, rides, prizes and refreshments, the Easter Eggstravaganza will for sure be one to put a smile on the faces of the little ones. There will be three separate age groups, with different “hunting” areas for each to allow all the children to enjoy the annual Easter egg hunt held at the event.

The celebration of the Easter holiday and fun filled kid activities are not the only reasons making this one of the most highly anticipated Rocky Mount Family Events on the calendar, as it also signifies the start of spring for many with the official opening of Sunset Park for the season.

In addition to the Easer Egg Hunt, there will also be inflatable games, free admission to the Children’s Museum, and other special activities including a meeting and greet with you favorite characters! Also free hot dog combos to be given away while supplies last. Also, the lucky “hunter” hat finds any of the “golden eggs” will be rewarded with a special grand prize.

In addition, Sunset Park also features concession stands, lighted basketball and tennis courts, four picnic shelters in addition to many other picnic sites, and a little league baseball field. The park is open for children’s parties as well, and can be reserved in two hour blocks for up to 40 children at a time.

North-Carolina-Breweries

The bustling industry of craft beers across the state gained another boost from Rocky Mount Mills as it was recently announced that the venue will begin with its first “class,” consisting of several North Carolina Breweries joining a brewing incubator.

There will be four North Carolina Breweries sharing a refurbished, on site, 6,000 square foot shipping warehouse, and each will be able to produce up to 1,000 barrels annually and have a keg cooler featuring eight taps to serve their finished product from. In addition, they will be given the opportunity to take classes in the Nash Community College Brewing, Distillation, and Fermentation program and be serving up their brews in a public beer garden.

The four North Carolina Breweries involved will be, Planetary Elixirs, HopFly Brewing Company, BDD Brewing Company and Bull Durham Beer Company. The Bull Durham Beer Company is already up and open for business, Planetary Elixirs will be soon bottling their product, and HopFly just “opened up shop,” on November 18. The fourth of the North Carolina Breweries involved, BDD Brewing Company is set to debut later this winter.

“Our inaugural class of brewers comes from all walks of life and bring with them different approaches, methods, and philosophies towards brewing,” says Sebastian Wolfrum, executive brewmaster of Rocky Mount Mills. “We see the spirit that built Rocky Mount Mills 200 ago, and that continues to make our community one of hard work and triumph in each of them. We’re looking forward to seeing and, more importantly, tasting what they have to offer.”

Cummins Planetarium

Upon its opening, Cummins Planetarium, which is housed inside the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences building, became the very first planetarium in North Carolina to feature a full-dome video projection system. Giving visitors both young and old a consistent and divers variety of shows, Cummins Planetarium runs four different shows monthly, with each being having a showing once daily every Tuesday-Saturday. The two other  shows at Cummins Planetarium are more specifically aimed at different age groups, with one that is sure to have the youngsters smiling from ear to ear and a second that will get the parents in the family tapping their toes and maybe even reminiscing of some great music from the past.

A can’t miss showing for the young ones this month at Cummins Planetarium is , “One World, One Sky,” is advertised as “a magical musical journey into space for families with kids ages 3-6 years old. Featuring all your children’s favorite characters from the show “Sesame Street,” this is “Big Bird’s Adventure,” and he and many of his pals take you and the kids on a fun-filled journey to the moon and back. For the older generation, “Laser Classic Rock” will bring them back to the days of stadium-sized rock and roll from the late 1960’s and 70’s as this show is set to the tunes of some of the greatest classic rockers of all time, including, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, and many more.
