Belmont Lake Golf Club

Over the weekend of September 19, on site PGA professional at Belmont Lake Preserve North Carolina golf community, Tim Wilke, teamed up with PGA Area 10 representative, Buddy Lawrence, to give a group of area children ages 2-18 an afternoon they won’t soon forget, calling on some of their fellow pros and the North Carolina Wesleyan golf team for instructional help, as a wonderful time was had by all at the first annual Carolina PGA & Area 10 Youth Golf Instructional Day hosted by the Belmont Lake Golf Club .

Wilke, who first envisioned, and then organized the one day camp at Belmont Lake Golf Club, set his sights in planning the event on allowing some local children who may not ordinarily have the opportunity to learn from himself and the other PGA professionals on hand to assist him in making the day a success. Attendees were taught the fundamentals in all aspects of golf, starting with etiquette and basic rules and moving through stations set up throughout the course to instruct them on using different irons, putting, and even bunker play.

Working hard and completely volunteering his own time, Wilke sought out businesses and members of the Rocky Mount community to help in generating the revenue needed to give the kids this special day at Belmont Lake Golf Club. For his thoughtful efforts, Wilke was pleased to see local sponsors step up and generate $5,000 to turn his idea of the Junior Golf Camp into a reality. In a further show of unity within the Rocky Mount community, food was also donated for the event as well, allowing for all 90 children who participated to enjoy a nice lunch on top of the free hat that each were given thanks to the sponsorship funds raised.

Speaking to Rocky Mount Telegram newspaper on the success and overall great time had by all at the event, Wilke noted, “We’ve recognized that there’s a need to get more kids in the area involved with the game.” He added, “Golf is a great game from a character standpoint… I love the youth, and it’s important that we get them interested at a young age.”

With the resounding response from the participants, the sponsors, the NC Wesleyan team, and the PGA pros, all of whose generosity all made the Belmont Lake Golf Club Junior Golf Camp possible, and the wonderful time that was had throughout the day by all, Wilke has already began preparations to make the event an annual function at Belmont Lake Golf Club as he has started the planning process for next years event.
