The all-free “Paws in the Park” event promotes responsibility in pet ownership and the humane treatments of dogs, with a full day of contests and special events. Kicking off the day’s festivities at 10:00 a.m. will be the Grand Opening ceremony and dedication of the Rocky Mount Dog Park, which is located at 1301 Dawson Place, adjacent to Sunset Park. Following the dedication at 11:00, the dogs will take center stage, as contests taking place at the new Rocky Mount Dog Park will include participating canines being recognized in a variety of categories including, Cutest, Pet and Owner “Look-a-Likes,” and Musical Chairs.

In addition to the contest, “Paws in the Park” will also host a series of special events at the Rocky Mount Dog Park throughout the afternoon. The “Pet Parade” will give the community a chance to see dogs “strutting their stuff” for all to see, as will the “Fashion Show,” with prizes awarded to winner’s of this event. Likewise, the “Costume Competition” and “Pet Talent Show,” have become annual favorites for the whole family to enjoy, as the canines get a chance to play “dress-up” and show off their unique talents in each of these attractions.

In addition to the luxurious amenities and the championship caliber 18 hole golf course at the premier North Carolina retirement community, Belmont Lake Preserve, a recent article published by the Huffington Post has added one more reason to for animal lovers to relocate to Eastern North Carolina for their retirement years, naming Rocky Mount among the top ten Best U.S. Cities for Retirement for Pet Owners.

The article was written by Moria McGarvey, the founder of GangsAway.com, which is the Huffington Post’s website dedicated strictly to helping plan one’s retirement. In ranking the top ten Best U.S. Cities for Retirement for Pet Owners, McGarvey noted looking at communities that were “tailor-made” for those with dogs and other pets. She explained the many benefits of having a dog especially as one nears their retirement years, saying, “They can be especially beneficial as we age, for all the reasons you might surmise: companionship, protection, and exercise. Exercise is a big one,” she continued, “and let’s face it, dogs walk us. Getting out for a good walk, socializing at the dog park, chatting with another dog family at the coffee shop — these are all good things, but especially helpful if your inclinations might otherwise be solitary and sedentary.”

In the survey’s ranking of Rocky Mount among the Best U.S. Cities for Retirement for pet owners, it went further to explain the process in naming these communities to the list, saying, “We’ve looked at all the top lists and selected the best dog friendly towns that are also good retirement towns.” Speaking more specifically to Rocky Mount’s inclusion to the list of the Best U.S. Cities for Retirement for Pet Owners, the piece detailed three main points.

Also noted were Rocky Mount’s three top-notch veterinary hospitals and the selection of adoptive pets that are available through both the Edgecombe-Nash Humane Society and Rocky Mount Animal Control.

Belmont Lake Golf Course after update

Since being purchased by the Halle Building Group just under two years ago, the stunning renovations and quality additions that are synonymous with the Maryland based developers have grabbed the attention of golfers across the state, as the Belmont Lake Golf Club in Rocky Mount has seen a 500 percent increase in membership at the beautiful NC Golf Course in the past 18 months.

A recent article in Triangle Golf Today (TGT) focused on the beautification of the NC Golf Course and the meteoric rise it has seen in both membership sales and rounds of golf played at the Belmont Lake Club. The Triangle Golf piece detailed that In addition to the aforementioned 500 percent increase in memberships, the rounds of golf played at Belmont Lake have increased in the past year from 5,000 to a projected 22,000 for 2014. Speaking with TGT on the growth he has seen since leaving his previous gigs at Charlotte Country Club and The Palisades Country Club, Belmont Lake head pro, Tim Wilke explained, “When I came here I knew there was ample opportunity for progress to be made. It just took some energy and commitment and enthusiasm.”
